CHURCHES AND RELATED PROJECTS

With the exploding growth of the cellular telephone industry came the need for more and more cell towers to be located around the city. Space to locate towers became a real problem for the telephone carriers and more and more creative ways were sought to locate them where they were needed but in various disguises.

One location that was perfect to cover the necessary transmission was on the property of Sharon Baptist Church. Expressing the all-to-familiar statement, NIMBY, the church was at first not interested. However, when Bell Atlantic expressed an interest in building the tower, leasing the ground on which the tower would sit with access and having it designed to be compatible with the design of the church, the congregation was interested.

The tower is of fiberglass and has no metal components of any sort above the uppermost arches so as not to interfere with the transmission. The brick was obtained from the same pit as the original church and buried conduit from the adjacent existing building will allow future use of the tower as a base for carillons provided by the church.

Construction cost, $250,000.
