In April of 1986, fire completely destroyed the building out of which Little Hardware Company had operated for approximately sixty years. For Charlotte, it was the demise of an active participant in and contributor to the construction industry throughout the metrolina area. The Owners, however, immediately announced that they intended to rebuild on the same site and they selected Clary Architects, Inc. to serve as their architect.
The new building approximately doubled the size of the original facility and consisted of 18,000 square feet of retail space, 6,000 square feet of offices on two levels and 9,000 square feet of new warehouse space with a large covered dock area. Renovation of an adjacent warehouse undamaged by the fire brought the total of the new Little Hardware Company to 48,540 square feet.
Construction was completed within ten months and totaled $1,212,000.
