In early 1981 the State of North Carolina purchased the Coddington Building, a Charlotte landmark in the western quadrant of the center city. Clary Architects, Inc. was selected by the State to program and remodel the building into offices for twelve state government
agencies scattered around the city. The existing building consisted of 100,000 square feet to which an additional 10,000 square feet was added for supplemental stairways and mechanical equipment. Extensive removal of asbestos was included in the construction process and the
total cost of construction was in excess of $3,425,000.
