In an effort to keep pace with its growing business and, as a result of a merger with another supermarket chain of equal size, Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc. commissioned Clary Architects, Inc. to design this major expansion to their existing distribution center. The elements of the 44,204 square foot addition consisted of 10,631 square feet of produce cooler warehouse, 18,641 square feet of freezer warehouse (-10 degrees and -20 degrees), 3,816 square feet of salvage dock area, and renovation of the existing product surge area which yielded nine additional refrigerated truck dock slips. In addition, an existing employees' vending machine area was enlarged and remodeled into a full service employees' cafeteria.
The project was designed to allow the continuous operation and expansion of the existing cooler and freezer warehouses without interruption during construction. Despite the coming holiday season, the construction was completed on time with no loss of perishable foods that has been ordered especially for the holiday season.
The project was completed within the scheduled time desired by the client for the budgeted $2,515,000.
